Easily Track Your Work Hours in Jira with ManicTime

Struggling to track your time in Jira? ManicTime makes time entry effortless. With its Jira plugin, you can pull issues from Jira, tag time in ManicTime, and seamlessly sync work logs back to Jira. You can do this in two ways:

  • Windows client
  • Cloud or ManicTime Server (Mac, Linux, Windows)

Creating Jira work logs from Windows client

First you need to connect ManicTime to Jira. Go to plugins, Jira and then Settings.

You can connect to Jira cloud or local Jira server.

Setting Up Your Tags

On the settings page you can choose what works for you, but one important setting is "Starting tags". This ensures that you will recognize tags coming from Jira. Let's say we set this field to "Jira issues":

So if on Jira you have a project "Website redesign - ClearView Consulting" and one of the tasks is "Wireframes & Mockups", you would see this in ManicTime:

Jira issues, Website Redesign - ClearView Consulting, #WRCC-2 "Wireframes & Mockups"

Where:

  • "Jira issues" - The starting tag defined in settings. This helps you identify tags coming from Jira.
  • "Website Redesign - ClearView Consulting" - Project name in Jira
  • #WRCC-2 "Wireframes & Mockups" - The task identifier (#WRCC-2) used for syncing with Jira, followed by the task name.

Tagging and Syncing Work Logs

In the Add Tag window, enter “Jira issues” to view all Jira tasks.

Tag your time, and the Jira tag will appear on the Tag Timeline.

To send tagged time back to Jira, click on plugin icon, then "Issues from Jira" and "Save work".

Once work is synced back to Jira, you will see it on Jira task under Work logs.

Creating Jira work logs from ManicTime Cloud or On-Premise Server

Administrator must first create a Jira connection in Administration, Connections configurations. Read more about on-premise server connection.

There are three important parts:

  • The user which is used in configuration should be an administrator which has access to all issues. This user will be used when reading issues for other users as well.
  • Sync tags back to Jira - this will automatically sync tags back to Jira every two hours. Administrator can also force a sync in Connections configuration.
  • Starting tags - What all tags coming from jira will be preceded by.

Once connection is done, each user can create a connection on My connections. On Administration page go to My connections. Create a new Jira connection.

Once connection is made, you will see tags in Add tag window:

Once connected, Jira issues will appear in Add Tag, and tagged time will sync back to Jira if "Sync tags back to Jira" is enabled.

By default tagged time is synced back to Jira every 2 hours. Administrators can force a Sync under Connections configuration, click on three dots next to Jira plugin and click "Sync now".

Conclusion

The ManicTime Jira plugin makes tracking time in Jira effortless. Whether you're working on a small task or part of a larger Jira project, ManicTime ensures accurate time tracking and reporting, so you can focus on getting work done, not logging hours.
